Childs attended The Citadel and George Washington University, served as an officer in the Marine Corps, was a professor of history and political science at The Citadel. He received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. Born in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of William Wallace Childs and Elizabeth (Lise) Rutledge Ravenel.
